Hebrews 10; part 1, Love VS Religion

Hebrews 10; part 1, Love VS Religion

September 27, 2014
Hebrews 10 Part 1.  Ritual (Religion) Bad, Love & Obey God, Good.

Isn’t Religion Loving God?   Nope.

[Heb 10:1 ESV] For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.

If it worked, it would have stopped after the first one.
[Heb 10:2 ESV] Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins?
[Heb 10:3 ESV] But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year.

Animal sacrifice cannot remove your sin.
[Heb 10:4 ESV] For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
[Heb 10:5 ESV] Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, "Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me;
[Heb 10:6 ESV] in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure.

Hold on, If God has not pleasure in animal offerings, why did He command it?
1. What is the greatest of all commands?  Love God.

2. The offerings were to Make Atonement for sin.
[Lev 23:28 ESV] And you shall not do any work on that very day, for it is a Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the LORD your God.
Atonement:   kaphar: to cover, purge, make an atonement, make reconciliation, cover over with pitch

3. To remind the people of their sin and God’s Justice AND Mercy AND Grace.
[Lev 23:43 ESV] that your generations may know that I made the people of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God."

[Heb 10:7 ESV] Then I said, 'Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.'"
[Heb 10:8 ESV] When he said above, "You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings" (these are offered according to the law),
[Heb 10:9 ESV] then he added, "Behold, I have come to do your will." He does away with the first in order to establish the second.

Once For All
[Heb 10:10 ESV] And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
[Heb 10:11 ESV] And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
[Heb 10:12 ESV] But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,
[Heb 10:13 ESV] waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.

Once and for All.
[Heb 10:14 ESV] For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

Holy Spirit Fortified
[Heb 10:15 ESV] And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,
[Heb 10:16 ESV] "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,"
[Heb 10:17 ESV] then he adds, "I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more."
[Heb 10:18 ESV] Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

No more need for religion (man-made ritual) works.

The condition of the heart.
[Psa 51:16 NIV] You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
[Psa 51:17 NIV] My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.
[Psa 51:18 NIV] May it please you to prosper Zion, to build up the walls of Jerusalem.
[Psa 51:19 NIV] Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous, in burnt offerings offered whole; then bulls will be offered on your altar.

Ritual (religion) without real love is rejected by God.
[Amo 5:21 ESV] "I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.
[Amo 5:22 ESV] Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; and the peace offerings of your fattened animals, I will not look upon them.
[Amo 5:23 ESV] Take away from me the noise of your songs; to the melody of your harps I will not listen.
[Amo 5:24 ESV] But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
[Amo 5:25 ESV] "Did you bring to me sacrifices and offerings during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
[Amo 5:26 ESV] You shall take up Sikkuth your king, and Kiyyun your star-god--your images that you made for yourselves,
[Amo 5:27 ESV] and I will send you into exile beyond Damascus," says the LORD, whose name is the God of hosts.

God has always been after our affections.
[Psa 14:2 ESV] The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God.
[Psa 14:3 ESV] They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.
[Psa 14:4 ESV] Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the LORD?

This is what a Living Sacrifice Looks Like.
[Rom 12:1 ESV] I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

Great Command
Great Commission
5 Disciplines

Quote from Kirk Cameron:
Cameron: When you make a decision, like, 'I’m not comfortable saying that line or doing that scene.’  Well, that meant that 11 writers had to come up with a new scene. And that meant that the other actors and actresses in that scene had to learn new lines, because I didn’t want to do that scene. It’s very easy for tabloids to grab onto that and say, ‘What’s the best way we can spin this into a front page story? I know! Kirk Cameron goes off the religious deep end!’ When in actuality, it was nothing more than a 17-year-old kid finding something that was worth more than all the celebrity in the world and wanting his life to be a living thank you to the God who had saved him from hell and adopted him into His own family.
Hebrews 9: Sealed with Blood

Hebrews 9: Sealed with Blood

September 23, 2014
[Heb 9:1 ESV] Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly place of holiness.

Old Testament Rules
Civil, Ritual, Moral.
Christians still follow the Moral Code.
Holiness means set apart:   Earthly place of holiness.

The Earthly holy place.
[Heb 9:2 ESV] For a tent was prepared, the first section, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence. It is called the Holy Place.
[Heb 9:3 ESV] Behind the second curtain was a second section called the Most Holy Place,
[Heb 9:4 ESV] having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron's staff that budded, and the tablets of the covenant.
[Heb 9:5 ESV] Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.

A few of the Regulations:
[Heb 9:6 ESV] These preparations having thus been made, the priests go regularly into the first section, performing their ritual duties,
[Heb 9:7 ESV] but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people.

God’s too Holy, We are too evil.  No reconciliation yet.
[Heb 9:8 ESV] By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing
[Heb 9:9 ESV] (which is symbolic for the present age). According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper,

[Heb 9:10 ESV] but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation.

Jesus The High Priest
[Heb 9:11 ESV] But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation)
[Heb 9:12 ESV] he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.

[Heb 9:13 ESV] For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh,
[Heb 9:14 ESV] how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
1. Purify our conscience
2. From dead works
3. To serve the Living God.

Our Hearts, A guilty conscience.
[1Jo 3:19 NIV] This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence:
[1Jo 3:20 NIV] If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.
[1Jo 3:21 NIV] Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God
[1Jo 3:22 NIV] and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him.
[1Jo 3:23 NIV] And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.
[1Jo 3:24 NIV] The one who keeps God's commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

Christ is the Mediator of the New Covenant.
[Heb 9:15 ESV] Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.

A Will ain’t no good unless the person has died.
[Heb 9:16 ESV] For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established.
[Heb 9:17 ESV] For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive.

Sealed with blood.
[Heb 9:18 ESV] Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood.
[Heb 9:19 ESV] For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,
[Heb 9:20 ESV] saying, "This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you."
[Heb 9:21 ESV] And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship.
[Heb 9:22 ESV] Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

Why blood?
Blood means something had to die for sins.
The Bible also tells us the life is in the blood.
[Lev 17:11 NIV] For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one's life.

Doesn’t that make God like an outdated deity?
Reminder:  God is Holy, Just & Eternal.
You and I are unholy and full of injustice, unless it is committed against us.

When we do one little, teeny tiny sin.  (That statement is putrid evil)
A sin is always against the Holy, Just & Eternal God of the Universe.
The punishment MUST fit the crime.  It’s only Fair.

[Heb 9:23 ESV] Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

Jesus Offered Himself at the Real Temple in Heaven.
[Heb 9:24 ESV] For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.

No Yo-Yo Jesus, Wesleyans
[Heb 9:25 ESV] Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own,
[Heb 9:26 ESV] for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

Once for ALL!
[Heb 9:27 ESV] And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
[Heb 9:28 ESV] so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

Hebrews 8; The Real Deal

Hebrews 8; The Real Deal

September 13, 2014

Hebrews 8

[Heb 8:1 ESV] Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in Heaven,
[Heb 8:2 ESV] a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man.

Jesus before his false trial:
[Mat 26:63 ESV] But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, "I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God."
[Mat 26:64 ESV] Jesus said to him, "You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven."

Jesus also Shares the Prophecy of David.
[Mar 12:35 ESV] And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, "How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?
[Mar 12:36 ESV] David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared, "'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet."'
[Mar 12:37 ESV] David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?" And the great throng heard him gladly.

Requirements for Priests
[Heb 8:3 ESV] For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer.
[Heb 8:4 ESV] Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law.

Copy & Shadow of reality.
[Heb 8:5 ESV] They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, "See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain."

The Temple was a copy/shadow
The World is a copy/shadow.
Your Body is a copy/shadow.
Our current existence is a copy/shadow of something far greater! Far more real.

Mortal swallowed up by life
[2Co 5:1 NIV] For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.
[2Co 5:2 NIV] Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling,
[2Co 5:3 NIV] because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked.
[2Co 5:4 NIV] For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
[2Co 5:5 NIV] Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

We Eagerly Await leaving the shadowlands.
[Rom 8:18 NIV] I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.
[Rom 8:19 NIV] For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.
[Rom 8:20 NIV] For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope
[Rom 8:21 NIV] that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.
[Rom 8:22 NIV] We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.
[Rom 8:23 NIV] Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.
[Rom 8:24 NIV] For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have?

The New Covenant is better than the old.
[Heb 8:6 ESV] But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.

What does he mean “faultless?”
[Heb 8:7 ESV] For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second.

The Answer is in verse 9.

[Heb 8:8 ESV] For he finds fault with them when he says: "Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,
[Heb 8:9 ESV] not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not continue in my covenant, and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.

A Holy God & Sinful Man don’t mix well.  There can be no intimacy.

After reminding the Israelites how God brought them out of Egypt.
[Jos 24:19 ESV] But Joshua said to the people, "You are not able to serve the LORD, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins.
[Jos 24:20 ESV] If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm and consume you, after having done you good."
[Jos 24:21 ESV] And the people said to Joshua, "No, but we will serve the LORD."
[Jos 24:22 ESV] Then Joshua said to the people, "You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the LORD, to serve him." And they said, "We are witnesses."
[Jos 24:23 ESV] He said, "Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your heart to the LORD, the God of Israel."
[Jos 24:24 ESV] And the people said to Joshua, "The LORD our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey."

The New Covenant is Very Intimate!
[Heb 8:10 ESV] For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
[Heb 8:11 ESV] And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.

Eze Prophecy of a time coming.
[Eze 36:26 ESV] And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
[Eze 36:27 ESV] And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.

Holy Spirit Indwells You!
[1Co 6:19 ESV] Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,
[1Co 6:20 ESV] for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

[Heb 8:12 ESV] For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more."

[Heb 8:13 ESV] In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
Historical Observations.
There is no more temple or sacrifices.
Only rituals that represent Old Covenant rituals

You true meaning and purpose in life is only in Christ.  Leave dead works.

[Heb 6:1 ESV] Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,

[Heb 9:14 ESV] how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

Religion is dead works. Religion defined as man-made rules that can earn Heaven.
Anything that encroaches on the Finished Work of Jesus Christ is religion.

Fellowship, Ministry, Worship, Evangelism, Discipleship, is the response of people who are saved.
It’s how we We Love God and People and make Disciples who Love God and People.

Hebrews 7; The Priest Forever

Hebrews 7; The Priest Forever

September 1, 2014

Hebrews 7 Melchizedek Priesthood Greater than Aaronic Priesthood

[Gen 14:18 ESV] And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.)

[Gen 14:19 ESV] And he blessed him and said, "Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth;

[Gen 14:20 ESV] and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!" And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

His Name, Title and Role:

[Heb 7:1 ESV] For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,

[Heb 7:2 ESV] and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace.

Melchizedek = "king of righteousness"

Salem means Peace.

King of Righteousness, The King of Peace

A comparison of similarities.

[Heb 7:3 ESV] He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.

[Heb 7:4 ESV] See how great this man was to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a tenth of the spoils!

Priesthood receives Tithes.

[Heb 7:5 ESV] And those descendants of Levi who receive the priestly office have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers, though these also are descended from Abraham.

Abraham Tithed, Melchizedek Blessed.

[Heb 7:6 ESV] But this man who does not have his descent from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.

[Heb 7:7 ESV] It is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior.

[Heb 7:8 ESV] In the one case tithes are received by mortal men, but in the other case, by one of whom it is testified that he lives.

Levi Tithed via Great. . .Granddaddy Abraham

[Heb 7:9 ESV] One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham,

[Heb 7:10 ESV] for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him.

A New Priest for a New Convenient

Old Convenient does not make people Perfect before the Holiness of God.

[Heb 7:11 ESV] Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one named after the order of Aaron?

[Heb 7:12 ESV] For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well.

Jesus is not from the tribe of Levi, but Judah

[Heb 7:13 ESV] For the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar.

[Heb 7:14 ESV] For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.

Requirement for Melchizedek Priesthood. . . .  Be Immortal.

[Heb 7:15 ESV] This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek,

[Heb 7:16 ESV] who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life.

Prophecies about Jesus

[Heb 7:17 ESV] For it is witnessed of him, "You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.

New Covenant Greater than the Old Covenant

[Heb 7:18 ESV] For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness

[Heb 7:19 ESV] (for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.

God’s Word w/ an Oath.

[Heb 7:20 ESV] And it was not without an oath. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath,

[Heb 7:21 ESV] but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him: "The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, 'You are a priest forever.'"

[Heb 7:22 ESV] This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant.

Living Forever Makes Jesus the Final King/Priest in the order of Melchizedek

[Heb 7:23 ESV] The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office,

[Heb 7:24 ESV] but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever.

Serious Benefit!  Saved Forever

[Heb 7:25 ESV] Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

Such a High Priest!

[Heb 7:26 ESV] For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

Jesus Offered Up Himself!

[Heb 7:27 ESV] He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.

The Perfect Son Forever, appointed by the Oath of God

[Heb 7:28 ESV] For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.
