The Jewish Messiah is the most important person in all of human history.
For the Jew and none Jew.
The oldest historical writings about the one who can reconcile Creator God and His Creation.
Christmas celebrates the arrival, birth of the King of the Universe.
Christmas has two root words. Christ and Mass.
Christ = Messiah
Mass = Celebration
The Old Testament foretells of this Messiah to come.
[Mat 2:3 ESV] When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;
[Mat 2:4 ESV] and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.
[Mat 2:5 ESV] They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:
[Mat 2:6 ESV] "'And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'"
[Mat 2:7 ESV] Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared.
This Messiah is everything a Cosmic Ruler would need, wrapped up into One Super Dude.
He would have to be, if He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
The Prophet, Priest, King
He is the subject and the object
Nicene Creed
The purpose of a creed is to act as a yardstick of correct belief, or orthodoxy.
Some would come along with a heresy and the Church would come together, sort out the Scriptures, compile the Truths and come to a conclusion or Bedrock Doctrine of Truth on various topics.
These Truths
Nicene Creed Composed around 325AD to combat forms of heresy.
The big one was Arianism; That Jesus was not fully God.
Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made.
Who, for us men for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary, and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again, with glory, to judge the quick and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from the Father [and the Son]; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; and I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Son of Man: One of the Titles Jesus used most frequent when referring to Himself was “Son of Man”.
The Ancient of Days: God the Father
[Dan 7:9 ESV] "As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire.
[Dan 7:10 ESV] A stream of fire issued and came out from before him; a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.
[Dan 7:12 ESV] As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.
[Dan 7:13 ESV] "I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.
[Dan 7:14 ESV] And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
What did the vision mean?
[Dan 7:27 ESV] And the kingdom and the dominion and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High; his kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.'
Son of Man: kenosis, emptied of deity.
[Phl 2:4 ESV] Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
[Phl 2:5 ESV] Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
[Phl 2:6 ESV] who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,
[Phl 2:7 ESV] but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
[Phl 2:8 ESV] And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
[Phl 2:9 ESV] Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
[Phl 2:10 ESV] so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
[Phl 2:11 ESV] and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Hypostatic Union: God Man
[Hbr 1:1 ESV] Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets,
[Hbr 1:2 ESV] but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.
[Hbr 1:3 ESV] He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
[Hbr 1:4 ESV] having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
Hypostatic means personal. The hypostatic union is the personal union of Jesus’ two natures.
100% God
100% Human
Immanuel
[Isa 7:14 ESV] Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
[Mat 1:23 ESV] "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel" (which means, God with us).
Emptied of His own Divinity, Filled with the Holy Spirit;
[Mar 1:9 ESV] In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
[Mar 1:10 ESV] And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
[Mar 1:11 ESV] And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."
[Mar 1:12 ESV] The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.
In order for mankind to be reconciled to God one human had to be perfect.
[Hbr 4:14 ESV] Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
[Hbr 4:15 ESV] For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
[Hbr 4:16 ESV] Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
How did Jesus do it? How did He not sin?
First Adam, Last Adam Comparison
[1Cr 15:45 ESV] Thus it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being"; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
[1Cr 15:46 ESV] But it is not the spiritual that is first but the natural, and then the spiritual.
[1Cr 15:47 ESV] The first man was from the earth, a man of dust; the second man is from heaven.
[1Cr 15:48 ESV] As was the man of dust, so also are those who are of the dust, and as is the man of heaven, so also are those who are of heaven.
[1Cr 15:49 ESV] Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.
First Adam:
From the earth.
Sinless, Did not have an internal desire to be evil
The perfect human
Not Ignorant, He had knowledge. Why, God instructed him.
Don’t eat of the tree of the Knowledge of Good and evil.
Evil was an external source,
Delivered by a lie, miss-information.
The capacity to corrupt God’s creation was evident, if the source of the corruption was external to the creation.
Did not have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
Last Adam:
From Heaven
God;
Sinless, No internal desire for evil.
The Perfect Human
Emptied Himself of His Deity
Filled Himself with the Deity of the Holy Spirit.
Evil: external Source
Jesus was not impressed.
Jesus had to take on human form to be the perfect sacrifice for sin.
The one MAJOR difference that cannot be overlooked is that Jesus was filled with 3rd Person of the Trinity.
He was Holy Spirit Fortified!
The conclusion is always the same.
The Capacity to corrupt the Creator is impossible.
1. Born Sinless: Born Perfect, He was the Perfect Man. No internal desire of evil.
2. Filled with the Holy Spirit. Although Jesus emptied Himself of His Deity, He was empowered by the Holy Spirit.
The High Priest & King
[Hbr 5:4 ESV] And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was.
[Hbr 5:5 ESV] So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you";
[Hbr 5:6 ESV] as he says also in another place, "You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek."
[Hbr 5:7 ESV] In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
[Hbr 5:8 ESV] Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.
[Hbr 5:9 ESV] And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,
[Hbr 5:10 ESV] being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.
Like a son of man
[Rev 1:12 ESV] Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands,
[Rev 1:13 ESV] and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest.
[Rev 1:14 ESV] The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire,
[Rev 1:15 ESV] his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters.
[Rev 1:16 ESV] In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.
[Rev 1:17 ESV] When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, "Fear not, I am the first and the last,
[Rev 1:18 ESV] and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.
Our Response!
[1Pe 1:3 ESV] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
[1Pe 1:4 ESV] to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
[1Pe 1:5 ESV] who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
