Paul and Barnabas 1st Missionary Journey
Paul has three missionary Journeys
1st Missionary Journey (Acts 13-14):
2nd Missionary Journey (Acts 15:36-18:22):
3rd Missionary Journey (Acts 18:23-20:38):
Ordination & Sending of Paul and Barnabas
[Act 13:1 ESV] Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a lifelong friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
[Act 13:2 ESV] While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."
[Act 13:3 ESV] Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
[Act 13:4
ESV] So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and
from there they sailed to Cyprus.
First they go to the Synagogues.
[Act 13:5 ESV] When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John to assist them.
Who is bar-jesus? Creepy wizard who did not like the Gospel
Bar-jesus; means son of Jesus, Not Jesus Christ but
I. Elymas = "a wise man"
A. the Arabic name of the Jewish magnus or sorcerer Barjesus, Act 13:6
[Act 13:6 ESV] When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they came upon a certain magician, a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus.
Proconsul is a A Roman Deputy
[Act 13:7 ESV] He was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence, who summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God.
[Act 13:8 ESV] But Elymas the magician (for that is the meaning of his name) opposed them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith.
[Act 13:9 ESV] But Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him
[Act 13:10 ESV] and said, "You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?
[Act 13:11 ESV] And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and unable to see the sun for a time." Immediately mist and darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking people to lead him by the hand.
Whoa, this dude has super powers!
[Act 13:12 ESV] Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had occurred, for he was astonished at the teaching of the Lord.
We will see what teaching astonished the proconsul!
Note: John left them. “this is too much for me”.
[Act 13:13 ESV] Now Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. And John left them and returned to Jerusalem,
[Act 13:14 ESV] but they went on from Perga and came to Antioch in Pisidia. And on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down.
Here is the teaching that astonished the Procunsul.
[Act 13:15 ESV] After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent a message to them, saying, "Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, say it."
[Act 13:16 ESV] So Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said: "Men of Israel and you who fear God, listen. (Jews and non-jews)
[Act 13:17 ESV] The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it.
[Act 13:18 ESV] And for about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness.
[Act 13:19 ESV] And after destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance.
[Act 13:20 ESV] All this took about 450 years. And after that he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.
[Act 13:21 ESV] Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.
[Act 13:22 ESV] And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, 'I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.'
[Act 13:23 ESV] Of this man's offspring God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised.
He went from David directly to the Final King; Jesus!
The herald of the King John the Baptist
[Act 13:24 ESV] Before his coming, John had proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.
[Act 13:25 ESV] And as John was finishing his course, he said, 'What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but behold, after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.'
[Act 13:26 ESV] "Brothers, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to us has been sent the message of this salvation.
[Act 13:27 ESV] For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him.
[Act 13:28 ESV] And though they found in him no guilt worthy of death, they asked Pilate to have him executed.
[Act 13:29 ESV] And when they had carried out all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb.
[Act 13:30 ESV] But God raised him from the dead,
[Act 13:31 ESV] and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people.
[Act 13:32 ESV] And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers,
[Act 13:33 ESV] this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second Psalm, "'You are my Son, today I have begotten you.'
[Act 13:34 ESV] And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, he has spoken in this way, "'I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.'
[Act 13:35 ESV] Therefore he says also in another psalm, "'You will not let your Holy One see corruption.'
David died so this prophecy was not about David but someone else.
[Act 13:36 ESV] For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid with his fathers and saw corruption,
[Act 13:37 ESV] but he whom God raised up did not see corruption.
[Act 13:38 ESV] Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you,
You can’t just “do your best” you need to have your evil forgiven and forgotten.
[Act 13:39 ESV] and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.
Don’t reject this message
[Act 13:40 ESV] Beware, therefore, lest what is said in the Prophets should come about:
[Act 13:41 ESV] "'Look, you scoffers, be astounded and perish; for I am doing a work in your days, a work that you will not believe, even if one tells it to you.'"

The Big Picture.
Step back a get a better view of History
Now here is the real pattern for those who don’t believe in Jesus.
1. America is blip on the radar in world history. Look beyond your lifetime.
[2Th 2:1 ESV] Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers, (concerned they missed the return of Christ)
[2Th 2:2 ESV] not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come.
[2Th 2:3 ESV] Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction,
[2Th 2:4 ESV] who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.
[2Th 2:5 ESV] Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things?
God is retraining the revealing of the Lawless One. * This is plan waiting to be revealed.
[2Th 2:6 ESV] And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time.
[2Th 2:7 ESV] For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way.
[2Th 2:8 ESV] And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming.
[2Th 2:9 ESV] The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders,
[2Th 2:10 ESV] and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.
[2Th 2:11 ESV] Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false,
[2Th 2:12 ESV] in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
Romans 1. 3x God gave them over. . .
[2Th 2:13 ESV] But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.
[2Th 2:14 ESV] To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
[2Th 2:15 ESV] So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter.
[2Th 2:16 ESV] Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace,
[2Th 2:17 ESV] comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.
Back to Acts!
[Act 13:42 ESV] As they went out, the people begged that these things might be told them the next Sabbath.
[Act 13:43 ESV] And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who, as they spoke with them, urged them to continue in the grace of God.
[Act 13:44 ESV] The next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord.
Now the whole city wants to here and have come out to the Jewish center.
Resistance? Why?
[Act 13:45 ESV] But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul, reviling him.
[Act 13:46 ESV] And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you. Since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.
[Act 13:47 ESV] For so the Lord has commanded us, saying, "'I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.'"
Paul quotes Isaiah.
The high calling of the Jewish nation is to proclaim their King to the world.
[Isa 49:6 ESV] he says: "It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth."
[Act 13:48 ESV] And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.
This is how it works. You share the Gospel. God Saves.
[Act 13:49 ESV] And the word of the Lord was spreading throughout the whole region.
The unsaved, are not just indifferent tolerant unbelievers but outright violent and opposing enemies.
[Act 13:50 ESV] But the Jews incited the devout women of high standing and the leading men of the city, stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district.
[Act 13:51 ESV] But they shook off the dust from their feet against them and went to Iconium.
[Act 13:52 ESV] And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
Acts 14 Polarized Reaction
In Iconium
[Act 14:1 ESV] Now at Iconium they entered together into the Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.
[Act 14:2 ESV] But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.
[Act 14:3 ESV] So they remained for a long time, speaking boldly for the Lord, who bore witness to the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.
[Act 14:4 ESV] But the people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews and some with the apostles.
[Act 14:5 ESV] When an attempt was made by both Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to mistreat them and to stone them,
[Act 14:6 ESV] they learned of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding country,
[Act 14:7 ESV] and there they continued to preach the gospel.
