1 Corinthians; Chapter 12, Holy Spirit, Body of Christ, Unity
Saturday Oct 26, 2013
Saturday Oct 26, 2013
1. It takes the Holy Spirit
[1Cr 12:1 ESV] Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.
[1Cr 12:2 ESV] You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led.
[1Cr 12:3 ESV] Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says "Jesus is accursed!" and no one can say "Jesus is Lord" except in the Holy Spirit.
2. Gifts are for Service to be ACTIVE.
[1Cr 12:4 ESV] Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;
[1Cr 12:5 ESV] and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord;
[1Cr 12:6 ESV] and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.
3. Your Gift is for the COMMON GOOD. It’s not for you
[1Cr 12:7 ESV] To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
What is your SHAPE?
Spiritual gifts
Heart
Abilities
Personality
Experiences
The right perspective of the supernatural. No one can say “Jesus is Lord”, except in the Holy Spirit.
That is our base line. That is the evidence of super natural intervention.
That is the phenomenal. The Miraculous.
A warning from Jesus.
[Mat 7:21 ESV] "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
[Mat 7:22 ESV] On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?'
[Mat 7:23 ESV] And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.'
Are you truly bearing the fruit of the Holy Spirit & Jesus?
[Luk 6:43 ESV] "For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit,
[Luk 6:44 ESV] for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.
[Luk 6:45 ESV] The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
[Luk 6:46 ESV] "Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you?
[Luk 6:47 ESV] Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like:
[Luk 6:48 ESV] he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.
[Luk 6:49 ESV] But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great."
4. Most of you are already empowered to do most of these.
[1Cr 12:8 ESV] For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,
[1Cr 12:9 ESV] to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
[1Cr 12:10 ESV] to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
[1Cr 12:11 ESV] All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
The Body of Christ. Many members, one body. We need each other.
** do not forsake meeting together**
[1Cr 12:12 ESV] For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.
[1Cr 12:13 ESV] For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--Jews or Greeks, slaves or free--and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
[1Cr 12:14 ESV] For the body does not consist of one member but of many.
[1Cr 12:15 ESV] If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body.
[1Cr 12:16 ESV] And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body.
[1Cr 12:17 ESV] If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell?
[1Cr 12:18 ESV] But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose.
[1Cr 12:19 ESV] If all were a single member, where would the body be?
[1Cr 12:20 ESV] As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.
[1Cr 12:21 ESV] The eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you," nor again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you."
[1Cr 12:22 ESV] On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable,
[1Cr 12:23 ESV] and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty,
[1Cr 12:24 ESV] which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it,
[1Cr 12:25 ESV] that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another.
[1Cr 12:26 ESV] If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.
[1Cr 12:27 ESV] Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.
Roll Call. Know your gifts and put them to work.
[1Cr 12:28 ESV] And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.
[1Cr 12:29 ESV] Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?
[1Cr 12:30 ESV] Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?
[1Cr 12:31 ESV] But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.

Folllowing are the sermon notes and the selected Scriptures highlighing the topics and the depth of God's Holy Word.
Who wrote this letter: Paul
• When: Writes "1 Corinthians" [Corinthians B] (c. AD 54-55)
From Where? : Ephesus 1 Cor. 16:8
AUTHOR: PAUL, the apostle (1Cr 1:1; 1Cr 16:21)
PLACE OF WRITING: EPHESUS (1Cr 16:8)
TIME OF WRITING:
Probably in the spring of 57 A.D., shortly before the Jewish feast of Pentecost (1Cr 16:8), during his third missionary journey (Act 19).
You can learn about how the Corinth church was established in Act 18
Several things happened at the final supper.
The Last Supper, Was the Jewish Passover Feast. Exodus 12
The final plague of God.
A lamb would be slaughtered and the blood put on the door frame of the home.
Thus the judging angel would pass over their homes.
The last supper was a pass-over supper.
[Jhn 1:28 ESV] These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
[Jhn 1:29 ESV] The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
[Jhn 1:35 ESV] The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples,
[Jhn 1:36 ESV] and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!"
[Jhn 1:37 ESV] The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.
During that pass-over supper.
1.Jesus washed the disciples feet. John 13.
2.Jesus washed the feet of Judas Iscariot
Feet that would run to the evil and bring that evil to Jesus in a garden.
3. Peter would declare allegiance but be told he would deny Jesus.
Jesus promises a heavenly home.
[Jhn 14:1 ESV] "Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.
[Jhn 14:2 ESV] In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
[Jhn 14:3 ESV] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit.
[Jhn 14:16 ESV] And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,
[Jhn 14:17 ESV] even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
Jesus Promises those who abide will bear fruit.
[Jhn 15:7 ESV] If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
[Jhn 15:8 ESV] By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
[Jhn 15:9 ESV] As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.
Jesus points out the world will hate you.
[Jhn 15:18 ESV] "If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.
[Jhn 15:19 ESV] If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
[Jhn 15:20 ESV] Remember the word that I said to you: 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.
[Jhn 15:21 ESV] But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.
[Jhn 15:22 ESV] If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.
[Jhn 15:23 ESV] Whoever hates me hates my Father also.
John 16
Jesus tells them about His death and how the disciples will all run away.
John 17 Jesus prays for His disciples and He prays for us also.
[Jhn 17:1 ESV] When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you,
[Jhn 17:2 ESV] since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.
[Jhn 17:3 ESV] And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
[Jhn 17:4 ESV] I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.
[Jhn 17:5 ESV] And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.
[Jhn 17:6 ESV] "I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.
[Jhn 17:7 ESV] Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you.
[Jhn 17:8 ESV] For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me.
[Jhn 17:9 ESV] I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.
[Jhn 17:10 ESV] All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.
[Jhn 17:11 ESV] And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.
[Jhn 17:12 ESV] While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.
[Jhn 17:13 ESV] But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
[Jhn 17:14 ESV] I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
[Jhn 17:15 ESV] I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.
[Jhn 17:16 ESV] They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
[Jhn 17:17 ESV] Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
[Jhn 17:18 ESV] As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.
[Jhn 17:19 ESV] And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.
[Jhn 17:20 ESV] "I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word,
[Jhn 17:21 ESV] that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
[Jhn 17:22 ESV] The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one,
[Jhn 17:23 ESV] I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.
[Jhn 17:24 ESV] Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.
[Jhn 17:25 ESV] O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me.
[Jhn 17:26 ESV] I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them."
Jesus shares this precious moment.
[Luk 22:14 ESV] And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him.
[Luk 22:15 ESV] And he said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
[Luk 22:16 ESV] For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God."
[Luk 22:17 ESV] And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, "Take this, and divide it among yourselves.
[Luk 22:18 ESV] For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."
[Luk 22:19 ESV] And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
[Luk 22:20 ESV] And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.
Now we come to the young church of Corinth.
And there are issues concerning the worship of communion.
[1Cr 11:17 ESV] But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse.
[1Cr 11:18 ESV] For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you. And I believe it in part,
[1Cr 11:19 ESV] for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized.
Genuine: Those who love Jesus and those who don’t.
Galations 5. Those who struggle with sin
[Jhn 14:15 ESV] "If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
Missed the boat on the Lord’s Supper.
A hedonistic pot-luck.
[1Cr 11:20 ESV] When you come together, it is not the Lord's supper that you eat.
[1Cr 11:21 ESV] For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal. One goes hungry, another gets drunk.
[1Cr 11:22 ESV] What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not.
This Communion Supper is about Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for you.
God becomes bigger & you become smaller.
[1Cr 11:23 ESV] For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread,
[1Cr 11:24 ESV] and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
[1Cr 11:25 ESV] In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."
[1Cr 11:26 ESV] For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes.
Warning to exercise humility
[1Cr 11:27 ESV] Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.
[1Cr 11:28 ESV] Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
For the Christian: Judgment is God’s discipline for your sanctification
For the lost (experimenting with religion) a communion service could end with sickness or worse, death.
[1Cr 11:29 ESV] For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.
[1Cr 11:30 ESV] That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.
Don’t be afraid to judge yourself in the view of perfection.
You are supposed to recognize and hate your sin.
Hatred of your sin leads to repentance.
[1Cr 11:31 ESV] But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged.
[1Cr 11:32 ESV] But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.
God does not condemn you, but He has Set You Free!
[Rom 8:1 ESV] There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
[Rom 8:2 ESV] For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
[Rom 8:3 ESV] For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,
[Rom 8:4 ESV] in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Free Indeed
[Jhn 8:34 ESV] Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.
[Jhn 8:35 ESV] The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever.
[Jhn 8:36 ESV] So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
[Gal 5:1 ESV] For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
[1Cr 11:33 ESV] So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another--
[1Cr 11:34 ESV] if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home--so that when you come together it will not be for judgment. About the other things I will give directions when I come.

Watch the powerpoint with the podcast and use the following sermon notes to deepen the study.
Basic premise; People are not that bad, God is overacting, petty, tyrannical
Grace & Mercy have no value unless they stand on the foundation of Justice.
No one struggles with the following verse.
[Rom 3:23 ESV] for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
We think sin is just, not that bad. Basically good but with a few tattered edges.
We are not really bothered with the following verse.
[Rom 6:23 ESV] For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Everybody dies, and look, God will take us to Heaven anyway.
But we really don’t believe these verses.
[Jer 17:9 ESV] The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
[Jer 17:10 ESV] "I the LORD search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds."
[Isa 53:6 ESV] All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned--every one--to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
[Psa 14:1 ESV] To the choirmaster. Of David. The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good.
[Psa 14:2 ESV] The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God.
[Psa 14:3 ESV] They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.
Now look upon the cross of Jesus and tell Him you are really not that bad.
Justice,
Common Grace is Delayed Justice
[Rom 8:28 NIV] And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
[2Pe 3:9 NIV] The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
The opposite is true for those who hate God.
[Hbr 10:26 NIV] If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left,
[Hbr 10:27 NIV] but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.
[Hbr 10:28 NIV] Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
[Hbr 10:29 NIV] How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?
[Hbr 10:30 NIV] For we know him who said, "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," and again, "The Lord will judge his people."
[Hbr 10:31 NIV] It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Special Grace & Mercy.
[Rom 3:20 NIV] Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God's sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.
[Rom 3:21 NIV] But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.
[Rom 3:22 NIV] This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile,
[Rom 3:23 NIV] for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
[Rom 3:24 NIV] and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
[Rom 3:25 NIV] God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood--to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished--
[Rom 3:26 NIV] he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
Paul now begins to instruct about Corporate Worship Behavior.
Prayer & Worship
Communion
[1Cr 11:1 ESV] Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.
[1Cr 11:2 ESV] Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you.
Theology: Required Order Of Responsibility. God, Jesus, Man, Woman.
[1Cr 11:3 ESV] But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.
Is this just a cultural thing or is it a theological/spiritual issue? Yes!
The Intent of Cultural Practice and the Intent of the heart.
It’s a cultural issue with spiritual significance.
Consider Jewish Culture. Men wore prayer shawls.
Issues specific to Corinthian Cultural.
1. Men with long hair; bad
2. women with short hair or shaven head; bad.
3. Head coverings meant submission.
a. Women good
b. Men bad
[1Cr 11:4 ESV] Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head,
[1Cr 11:5 ESV] but every wife who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven.
[1Cr 11:6 ESV] For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head.
Complementarianism holds that "God has created men and women equal in their essential dignity and human personhood, but different and complementary in function
Politically incorrect but Theologically Factual.
[1Cr 11:7 ESV] For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man.
Glory: doxa
Dignity, Dignities:
primarily denotes "an opinion, estimation, repute;" in the NT, always "good opinion, praise, honor, glory, an appearance commanding respect, magnificence, excellence, manifestation of glory;" hence, of angelic powers, in respect of their state as commanding recognition, "dignities," 2Pe 2:10;
It is issue of submission verses rebellion
[1Cr 11:8 ESV] For man was not made from woman, but woman from man.
[1Cr 11:9 ESV] Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.
Genesis Chapter 2
[Gen 2:18 ESV] Then the LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him."
Say What? What do the angels have to do with it?
[1Cr 11:10 ESV] That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.
1. Angels know their role and don’t buck the system
2. The Heavenly host is watching to see if our hearts are obedient or rebellious against God.
Paul Levels the Playing Field. Complementarianism.
[1Cr 11:11 ESV] Nevertheless, in the Lord
woman is not independent of man
nor man of woman;
[1Cr 11:12 ESV] for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman.
And all things are from God.
Back to the heart’s intent in the context of that cultural.
[1Cr 11:13 ESV] Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a wife to pray to God with her head uncovered?
Universally cultural. Men hairs styles vary, but long hair for women have always been accepted.
[1Cr 11:14 ESV] Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him,
[1Cr 11:15 ESV] but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering.
[1Cr 11:16 ESV] If anyone is inclined to be contentious, we have no such practice, nor do the churches of God.
No Set Practice in the other churches.
You can argue all day long.

What happens to people without an Advocate before A Holy God.
Keep in mind: They had an atonement system to avert the Wrath of God but not remove it.
[Hbr 10:1 ESV] For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.
[Hbr 10:2 ESV] Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins?
Every evil act of rebellion The Israelites did was in plain sight of God’s Visible presence. Don’t rebel against God, when you can go out your front door and see His presence. (They are an example to us)
[1Cr 10:5 ESV] Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
[1Cr 10:6 ESV] Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did.
Oh Oh, Idol worship leads to all kinds of sin. Paul mentions Exodus 32 and the Golden Calf.
[Exd 32:1 ESV] When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him, "Up, make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him."
[Exd 32:2 ESV] So Aaron said to them, "Take off the rings of gold that are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me."
[Exd 32:3 ESV] So all the people took off the rings of gold that were in their ears and brought them to Aaron.
[Exd 32:4 ESV] And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden calf. And they said, "These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!"
[Exd 32:5 ESV] When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, "Tomorrow shall be a feast to the LORD."
[Exd 32:6 ESV] And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.
Golden Calf
[1Cr 10:7 ESV] Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play."
The Judgment:
[Exd 32:27 ESV] And he said to them, "Thus says the LORD God of Israel, 'Put your sword on your side each of you, and go to and fro from gate to gate throughout the camp, and each of you kill his brother and his companion and his neighbor.'"
[Exd 32:28 ESV] And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. And that day about three thousand men of the people fell.
[Exd 32:35 ESV] Then the LORD sent a plague on the people, because they made the calf, the one that Aaron made.
But Aaron was forgiven.
[1Cr 10:8 ESV] We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three
thousand fell in a single day.
The Event in Numbers.
[Num 25:1 ESV] While Israel lived in Shittim, the people began to whore with the daughters of Moab.
[Num 25:2 ESV] These invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.
[Num 25:3 ESV] So Israel yoked himself to Baal of Peor. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.
[Num 25:4 ESV] And the LORD said to Moses, "Take all the chiefs of the people and hang them in the sun before the LORD, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel."
[Num 25:5 ESV] And Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Each of you kill those of his men who have yoked themselves to Baal of Peor."
[Num 25:6 ESV] And behold, one of the people of Israel came and brought a Midianite woman to his family, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of the whole congregation of the people of Israel, while they were weeping in the entrance of the tent of meeting.
[Num 25:7 ESV] When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose and left the congregation and took a spear in his hand
[Num 25:8 ESV] and went after the man of Israel into the chamber and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. Thus the plague on the people of Israel was stopped.
[Num 25:9 ESV] Nevertheless, those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.
[Num 25:10 ESV] And the LORD said to Moses,
[Num 25:11 ESV] "Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the people of Israel in my jealousy.
Biblical Integrity Issue? Is it 23 or 24 thousand? Answer Yes!
The Big Idea: Don’t rebel against God when He is Right There! A lot of people died.
It’s over 23 thousand.
Paul mentions Numbers 21. Fiery serpents, because people were grumbling against God.
[1Cr 10:9 ESV] We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents,
Paul points to Numbers 16 Woah, Never challenge God especially when you can see Him.
God sent a plague into the Israelite Camp.
Serpents
[Num 21:4 ESV] From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way.
[Num 21:5 ESV] And the people spoke against God and against Moses, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food."
[Num 21:6 ESV] Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.
[Num 21:7 ESV] And the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us." So Moses prayed for the people.
[Num 21:8 ESV] And the LORD said to Moses, "Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live."
[Num 21:9 ESV] So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.
[Num 21:10 ESV] And the people of Israel set out and camped in Oboth.
This is where Jesus references His sacrifice in John 3
[Jhn 3:13 ESV] No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.
[Jhn 3:14 ESV] And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
[Jhn 3:15 ESV] that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
[1Cr 10:10 ESV] nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer.
The Israelites rebelled against Moses
[Num 16:42 ESV] And when the congregation had assembled against Moses and against Aaron, they turned toward the tent of meeting. And behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared.
[Num 16:43 ESV] And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting,
[Num 16:44 ESV] and the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
[Num 16:45 ESV] "Get away from the midst of this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment." And they fell on their faces.
[Num 16:46 ESV] And Moses said to Aaron, "Take your censer, and put fire on it from off the altar and lay incense on it and carry it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone out from the LORD; the plague has begun."
[Num 16:47 ESV] So Aaron took it as Moses said and ran into the midst of the assembly. And behold, the plague had already begun among the people. And he put on the incense and made atonement for the people.
[Num 16:48 ESV] And he stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was stopped.
[Num 16:49 ESV] Now those who died in the plague were 14,700, besides those who died in the affair of Korah.
[Num 16:50 ESV] And Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting, when the plague was stopped.
Paul, why are you telling Christians about these things?
[1Cr 10:11 ESV] Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come.
A Humble view of yourself.
God is HOLY & Sovereign, WE are Not.
[1Cr 10:12 ESV] Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.
God’s Wrath has not consumed us, because His wrath has consumed Jesus Christ instead of us.
Note: Paul doesn’t say Christians are never tempted.
He says God has got your back when you are tempted.
[1Cr 10:13 ESV] No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
[1Cr 10:14 ESV] Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
The Offering of Christ and the memorial , Flesh and Blood. Unity the Christians that is why it is called Communion. Individuals with God and with each other. Commune.
[1Cr 10:15 ESV] I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.
[1Cr 10:16 ESV] The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?
[1Cr 10:17 ESV] Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.
The Jewish Sacrificial System. The people and the Levites ate the offerings.
[1Cr 10:18 ESV] Consider the people of Israel: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar?
An Idol is nothing, The Food is Food, but the intent of the pagans is evil.
[1Cr 10:19 ESV] What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?
[1Cr 10:20 ESV] No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons.
[1Cr 10:21 ESV] You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.
[1Cr 10:22 ESV] Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?
Freedom In Christ. Use it to encourage others.
[1Cr 10:23 ESV] "All things are lawful," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful," but not all things build up.
[1Cr 10:24 ESV] Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.
The Model, Don’t ask, don’t tell.
[1Cr 10:25 ESV] Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience.
[1Cr 10:26 ESV] For "the earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof."
[1Cr 10:27 ESV] If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience.
[1Cr 10:28 ESV] But if someone says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience—
Our day is alcohol. There is no command, “thou shalt not”. But for me. . . .
It’s not about you smartypants, it’s about them.
[1Cr 10:29 ESV] I do not mean your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else's conscience?
[1Cr 10:30 ESV] If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks?
Why? The Glory of God, That’s Why!
[1Cr 10:31 ESV] So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
[1Cr 10:32 ESV] Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God,
[1Cr 10:33 ESV] just as I try to please everyone in everything I do,
not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.

Look. You need to ask Jesus Christ to save you from your sin. Or you will not make it to Heaven.
