Reformation Sunday: The Five Solas
During the 16th Century. The reformers were protesting
Protestants . Protestors against Catholicism.
Battle Lines:
Authority: Church Authority VS Biblical Authority
Salvation: Synergy VS Monergy.
God’s Word is interconnected. You can’t talk about one theology with it leading to another theology.
The Five Guides protect us from man-made religion which war against Jesus Christ.
The goal of the world is simple
Anything but Jesus Christ. Pagan religions, secular humanism.
Or Jesus Christ +. . . . . Cults, heresies, TBN, prosperity preachers
Sola Scriptura - Scripture alone
[2Ti 3:16 ESV] All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
[2Ti 3:17 ESV] that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
Concerning divisions in the church:
[1Co 4:6 ESV] I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another.
Written Word Inspired by the Holy Spirit.
[2Pe 1:19 ESV] And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,
[2Pe 1:20 ESV] knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation.
[2Pe 1:21 ESV] For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Sola Christus - Christ alone
Jesus Christ is the only mediator. Penal Substitutionary atonement
[Jhn 14:5 ESV] Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?"
[Jhn 14:6 ESV] Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
[Jhn 14:7 ESV] If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him."
[1Ti 2:5 ESV] For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
[1Ti 2:6 ESV] who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.
Sola Gratia - Grace alone
Unmerited Grace:
[Eph 2:8 ESV] For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
[Eph 2:9 ESV] not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
[Eph 2:10 ESV] For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
God saved me, Despite Me, not because of me.
[Psa 14:2 ESV] The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God.
[Psa 14:3 ESV] They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.
Paul Reveals how Grace Works.
[2Co 12:9 ESV] But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
[2Co 12:10 ESV] For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Sola Fide - Faith alone
[Rom 5:1 ESV] Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
[Rom 5:2 ESV] Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
You do not create faith. God gives you Faith
[Rom 12:3 ESV] For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
[1Co 12:9 ESV] to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
The Disciples Ask Jesus for more Faith.
[Luk 17:5 ESV] The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!"
[Luk 17:6 ESV] And the Lord said, "If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you.
[Mar 9:23 ESV] And Jesus said to him, "'If you can'! All things are possible for one who believes."
[Mar 9:24 ESV] Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!"
[Heb 12:1 ESV] Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
[Heb 12:2 ESV] looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

It should be.

Jesus’ after Judas went off to betray Him.

[Jhn 13:32 ESV] If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once.
[Psa 96:4 ESV] For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; He is to be feared above all gods.
[Psa 96:5 ESV] For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the LORD made the heavens.
[Psa 96:6 ESV] Splendor and majesty are before Him; strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.
[Psa 96:7 ESV] Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength!
[Psa 96:8 ESV] Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name; bring an offering, and come into His courts!
[Psa 96:9 ESV] Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness; tremble before Him, all the earth!
[Psa 96:10 ESV] Say among the nations, "The LORD reigns! Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved; He will judge the peoples with equity."
[Psa 96:11 ESV] Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
[Psa 96:12 ESV] let the field exult, and everything in it! Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy
[Psa 96:13 ESV] before the LORD, for He comes, for He comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples in His faithfulness.
[1Co 10:31 ESV] So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Gospel Survey of Mark; the Action Gospel!
Who Wrote it and when?
Mark: No name in the book. So how do we know.
Early church fathers.
It is cited by Papias, Irenaeus, the Muratorian Canon (most likely), Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Origen, and Jerome.
Papias, for example, writes:3
And the elder said this: “Mark became an interpreter of Peter; as many things as he remembered he wrote down accurately (though certainly not in order4) the things said or done by the Lord. For he neither heard the Lord nor followed him, but he came later—as he said with reference to Peter who taught whenever the need arose,5 but he did not [teach] according to the arrangement of the oracles of the Lord,6 with the result that Mark did not err7 when he thus wrote certain things as he recalled them. For he planned out one goal ahead of time,8 namely, to leave out nothing which he heard and not to falsify any [of the words of Peter].”9
When & Where
The earliest gospel with an authorship of between A.D. 55 to A.D. 70. In Rome.
Mark has connections
Peter
[Act 12:12 ESV] When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying.
Peter mentions Mark.
[1Pe 5:13 ESV] She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son.
Paul and Barnabas
[Act 13:13 ESV] Now Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia. And John left them and returned to Jerusalem,
Big Fight because of Mark.
[Act 15:37 ESV] Now Barnabas wanted to take with them John called Mark.
[Act 15:38 ESV] But Paul thought best not to take with them one who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work.
[Act 15:39 ESV] And there arose a sharp disagreement, so that they separated from each other. Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus,
[Act 15:40 ESV] but Paul chose Silas and departed, having been commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord.
Paul trusts Mark again.
[2Ti 4:11 ESV] Luke alone is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry.
The preparation for Jesus’ ministry - Mk 1:2-13
[Mar 1:1 ESV] The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
[Mar 1:2 ESV] As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, "Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way,
[Mar 1:3 ESV] the voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,'"
[Mar 1:4 ESV] John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
[Mar 1:5 ESV] And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
[Mar 1:6 ESV] Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.
[Mar 1:7 ESV] And he preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.
[Mar 1:8 ESV] I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
[Mar 1:9 ESV] In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
[Mar 1:10 ESV] And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
[Mar 1:11 ESV] And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased."
[Mar 1:12 ESV] The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.
[Mar 1:13 ESV] And he was in

Thanksgiving
It’s easier to overflow or spill over with Thankfulness when you know why God put you here on earth and you are in sync with God’s purpose.
Thanksgiving: Family, Friends, Food, Football
A comfortable home, a working car, a favorite toy; gun, atv, tv. . .
God gives us these things for our enjoyment.
But here is the one thing God gives man, that truly gives a rich meaning to everything. Jesus!
The Gospel:
[Mar 10:45 ESV] For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many."
[Rom 6:23 ESV] For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
If you ever broke any of the 10 commandments even once, you sinned against God.
God is Good / He is Just, He is obligated by His nature to punish evil. Your evil and you with it.
[2Co 5:21 ESV] For our sake He (God) made Him (Jesus) to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him (Jesus) we might become the righteousness of God.
[1Jo 4:10 ESV] In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
You must trust in the finished work of Jesus Christ as your only reason why God would let you into Heaven.
Jesus paid your evil debt to God. Jesus was punished for your rebellion, Jesus was killed for your hatred of God.
[Act 2:37 ESV] Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"
[Act 2:38 ESV] And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
The greatest reason to give thanks & how to express Thanks to God!
[Col 3:1 ESV] If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
[Col 3:2 ESV] Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
[Col 3:3 ESV] For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
[Col 3:4 ESV] When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
[Col 3:5 ESV] Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
[Col 3:6 ESV] On account of these the wrath of God is coming.
[Col 3:7 ESV] In these you too once walked, when you were living in them.
[Col 3:8 ESV] But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
[Col 3:9 ESV] Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices
[Col 3:10 ESV] and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.
[Col 3:11 ESV] Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all. (True Unity in Diversity)
[Col 3:12 ESV] Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,
[Col 3:13 ESV] bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
[Col 3:14 ESV] And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
[Col 3:15 ESV] And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.
[Col 3:16 ESV] Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
[Col 3:17 ESV] And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
