Publicly confronting the religious leaders.

[Mat 22:41 ESV] Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question,

[Mat 22:42 ESV] saying, "What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "The son of David."

[Mat 22:43 ESV] He said to them, "How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

[Mat 22:44 ESV] "'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet"'?

[Mat 22:45 ESV] If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?"

[Mat 22:46 ESV] And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

1.    [Mat 22:41 ESV] Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question,

[Mat 22:42 ESV] saying, "What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "The son of David."

A few observations to the question:

What do you think about the Christ?

Pharisees knew a lot about a prophesied anointed one.

Whose Son is He?   That is a directed question.   Jesus and the Pharisees, knew the Bible specifically about who that information.

EVERYBODY Knew:

[Mat 21:8 ESV] Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.

[Mat 21:9 ESV] And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!"

Throne of David:

[Isa 9:7 ESV] Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

[Mat 1:1 ESV] The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

Shoot from the stump of Jesse

[Isa 11:1 ESV] There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.   (Jesse is David’s Father)

[Isa 11:2 ESV] And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.

[Isa 11:3 ESV] And his delight shall be in the fear of the LORD. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear,

[Isa 11:4 ESV] but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.

Jeremiah talks about him.

[Jer 23:5 ESV] "Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.

[Jer 23:6 ESV] In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: 'The LORD is our righteousness.'

Ezekiel

[Eze 34:23 ESV] And I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd.

[Eze 34:24 ESV] And I, the LORD, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them. I am the LORD; I have spoken.

Zechariah prophesied

[Luk 1:67 ESV] And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying,

[Luk 1:68 ESV] "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people

[Luk 1:69 ESV] and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David,

[Luk 1:70 ESV] as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,

[Luk 1:71 ESV] that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us;

[Luk 1:72 ESV] to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant,

[Luk 1:73 ESV] the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us

[Luk 1:74 ESV] that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear,

[Luk 1:75 ESV] in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

[Luk 1:76 ESV] And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,

[Luk 1:77 ESV] to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins,

[Luk 1:78 ESV] because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high

[Luk 1:79 ESV] to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace."

2.   [Mat 22:43 ESV] He said to them, "How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

“In the Spirit” The Holy Spirit Used David to write this Psalm.

[2Pe 1:19 ESV] And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,

[2Pe 1:20 ESV] knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation.

[2Pe 1:21 ESV] For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

[2Ti 3:16 ESV] All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

[2Ti 3:17 ESV] that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Zechariah prophesied

[Luk 1:67 ESV] And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying,

3.   [Mat 22:44 ESV] "'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet"'?

'The Lord said to my Lord,  God said to my God.

Yĕhovah said to 'Adonay

Jehovah = "the existing One"

the proper name of the one true God

unpronounced except with the vowel pointings of 0136

Adonay my lord, lord

of God

Lord - title, spoken in place of Yahweh in Jewish display of reverence

[Psa 110:1 ESV] A Psalm of David. The LORD says to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool."

[Psa 110:2 ESV] The LORD sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies!

[Psa 110:3 ESV] Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours.

[Psa 110:4 ESV] The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind, "You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek."

[Psa 110:5 ESV] The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.

[Psa 110:6 ESV] He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth.

[Psa 110:7 ESV] He will drink from the brook by the way; therefore he will lift up his head.

Passion Week Jesus is preparing to complete the role of the Suffering Servant.   Isaiah 53

But His reference to David is Psalm 110.   A Victorious King, Priest, Judge.

[Mat 22:45 ESV] If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?"

[Mat 22:46 ESV] And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

The Holy Spirit illuminates the heart and mind to understand Truth.   The religious leaders, Pharisees and Sadducees had all this Truth in front of them and could not understand it.

Christ, as God, was David's Lord; and Christ, as Man, was David's son.
