Chapter 12: Holy Spirit, Body of Christ, Unity
Chapter 13: LOVE
Chapter 14: Get Organized
Brief overview of 1 Corinthians 14.
Prophecy better than speaking tongues = foreign languages
Prophecy Defined:
1. Foretelling
2. Forth-telling: even when there was no finished New Testament to forth-tell from.
One thing is definitively for sure.
What was taking place during the lives of the First Churches around the ministry of the Apostles we are hard pressed to find genuine activities of the same nature.
Spiritual Gifts Defined
The Holy Spirit is still working.
Looking for Evidence of the Holy Spirit?
Salvation = Born Again.
[Jhn 6:41 ESV] So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven."
[Jhn 6:42 ESV] They said, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, 'I have come down from heaven'?"
[Jhn 6:43 ESV] Jesus answered them, "Do not grumble among yourselves.
[Jhn 6:44 ESV] No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
[Jhn 6:45 ESV] It is written in the Prophets, 'And they will all be taught by God.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me--
[Jhn 6:65 ESV] And he said, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father."
[Jhn 6:66 ESV] After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.
Sanctification:
[Rom 8:29 ESV] For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
[Rom 8:30 ESV] And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
[Rom 8:31 ESV] What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
The Fruit of the Spirit
[Gal 5:18 ESV] But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
[Gal 5:19 ESV] Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality,
[Gal 5:20 ESV] idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions,
[Gal 5:21 ESV] envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
[Gal 5:22 ESV] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
[Gal 5:23 ESV] gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
[Gal 5:24 ESV] And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
The Ability to pray
[Rom 8:26 ESV] Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
[Rom 8:27 ESV] And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
The Ability to Understand & Believe the Bible.
[1Cr 2:9 ESV] But, as it is written, "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him"--
[1Cr 2:10 ESV] these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.
[1Cr 2:11 ESV] For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
[1Cr 2:12 ESV] Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.
[1Cr 2:13 ESV] And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.
[1Cr 2:14 ESV] The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
[1Cr 2:15 ESV] The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one.
[1Cr 2:16 ESV] "For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ.
I am still growing also. I may be wrong.
Spiritual Gifts Defined (The reason for all the confusion)
1. Yes! The Holy Spirit is still doing miraculous things that are similar to the Spiritual Gifts
2. There is a difference!
a. Biblically: What they experienced in the first churches started by the Apostles is not what we are experiencing today.
i. How many of you are speaking 2 or more earth languages by way of instant miracle?
ii. How many of you zapping people in the hospitals for healing?
iii. How many of you continually prophesy to people about their future “with details”.
b. Not all gifts seem to be given, “once and for all.”
i. Early Church: People were labeled “prophets” Bam! They were empowered and it never stopped.
No Christian group anywhere will disagree that there are Miraculous Spiritual Interventions of the Holy Spirit. Can we call them (Spiritual Gifts)?
The Big difference I Observe for most gifts. Some I believe stick around longer or permanently.
They are provided at certain times & circumstance for specific purpose, then they are done.
More like a meal, than a third arm.
If I were to give you a gift card to Olive Garden.
You received it in full, used it entirely, then it was done. I did not take it back.
Healings: in our church this spring.
Camp prophecy:
Order in the Church! 14:26-40
Remember Gift of the Spirit: Self-Control!
The Corinthian Church had a different church bulletin than current churches.
The goal: To encourage each other with Biblical Truth. Not warm fuzzies.
[1Cr 14:26 ESV] What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up.
*Put a schedule of events on your Church Bulletin. Start with “ONE AT A TIME.”
Concerning Spiritual Empowered Foreign Languages. If no one is there to interpret, don’t talk. (So much for ecstatic prayer languages.)
[1Cr 14:27 ESV] If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret.
[1Cr 14:28 ESV] But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God.
Concerning Foretelling & Forth-Telling prophecy.
[1Cr 14:29 ESV] Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said.
[1Cr 14:30 ESV] If a revelation is made to another sitting there, let the first be silent.
[1Cr 14:31 ESV] For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged,
You will be held accountable for what you “prophecy”
[1Cr 14:32 ESV] and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets.
Ladies; Save it for home.
[1Cr 14:33 ESV] For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,
[1Cr 14:34 ESV] the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says.
[1Cr 14:35 ESV] If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.
Women had the gifts also, but they were not allowed to use it corporate group meetings.
[Act 21:8 ESV] On the next day we departed and came to Caesarea, and we entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him.
[Act 21:9 ESV] He had four unmarried daughters, who prophesied.
Paul concludes: These Orders are from God.
If you disagree with me, you are a fraud.
[1Cr 14:36 ESV] Or was it from you that the word of God came? Or are you the only ones it has reached?
[1Cr 14:37 ESV] If anyone thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are a command of the Lord.
[1Cr 14:38 ESV] If anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized.
Use your spiritual gifts as designated on the Church Bulletin.
[1Cr 14:39 ESV] So, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.
[1Cr 14:40 ESV] But all things should be done decently and in order.

Chapter 13: LOVE
Chapter 14: Get Organized
[1Cr 12:1 ESV] Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.
Unity & Diversity in the gifts of the Holy Spirit
1 Holy Spirit
1 body of Christ
A Point: The Holy Spirit is working Right Now. Looking for Evidence of the Holy Spirit?
Salvation = Born Again.
Sanctification
The Fruit of the Spirit
The Ability to pray
Answered Prayer
The Hermeneutical Gap. Cultural & linguistic
In a time when multiple cultures and languages where mixed together. A trade language which was common and native languages.
It makes since that the first believers were given “A Gift of multiple Languages” the bilingual or trilingual or even like Paul, “a whole bunch lingual”
All Empowering of Holy Spirit same type of event as that at the Pentecost Event. WHY?
The real goal is to spread the Word! Not spread the gifts.
Sensational-ism. It’s easier to be religious than to obey Jesus.
Tongues is a language for non-believers. The purpose is share Jesus in their own language.
One thing it most defiantly is not, is a prayer language for gathered Christians in a church.
It’s not a build up of Holy Spirit filling that reaches level where tongues spills out.
It’s a gift, so it effortless. No emotion needed. Blam! you are speaking Arabic!
Watch out for “showboating”
It is said don’t put God in a box, but if the only time your demonstrating the “gifts of the spirit” is during church time, that is a box.
If the sign gifts are being manifest, it is in the highways and byways, not on TV & large meetings.
People with the “gift of healing” should be in the hospitals.
People with the “gift of tongues” should know what language they are speaking and go be missionary.
The Greater the Presence of the Holy Spirit, The Greater the Self-Control
[Gal 5:22 ESV] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
[Gal 5:23 ESV] gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
The presence of the Holy Spirit brings greater self-control to the people, not lack of control.
Empowerment to share truth is not losing control, but boosting you with Power, in something you lack.
“Self-Control” Fruit of the Spirit. A “gift” of Holy Spirit would not negate the Fruit of the Spirit.
The power of the Holy Spirit gives allows us to look at our own sin.
To share Jesus with others, despite our fears.
To be reconciled to our Christian family.
1 Corinthians; Paul is addressing worship issues during times of gatherings.
Disorder in the church.
Show-boating: See my spiritual gift!
Define Spiritual Gifts (Tongues=languages) & It’s Purpose.
An earthly language miraculously given for the purpose of talking about Jesus Christ.
1. The Great commission
2. Pentecost
3. Signs of the First Time Believers.
1. The Great Commission:
[Mat 28:18 ESV] And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
[Mat 28:19 ESV] Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
[Mat 28:20 ESV] teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
[Act 1:8 ESV] But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."
Point 2. Pentecost:
[Act 2:1 ESV] When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.
[Act 2:2 ESV] And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
[Act 2:3 ESV] And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
[Act 2:4 ESV] And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
[Act 2:5 ESV] Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.
[Act 2:6 ESV] And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.
[Act 2:7 ESV] And they were amazed and astonished, saying, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?
[Act 2:8 ESV] And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?
[Act 2:9 ESV] Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
[Act 2:10 ESV] Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,
[Act 2:11 ESV] both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians--we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God."
[Act 2:12 ESV] And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?"
[Act 2:13 ESV] But others mocking said, "They are filled with new wine."
3 Signs for First Time Christians:
[Act 19:1 ESV] And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples.
[Act 19:2 ESV] And he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."
[Act 19:3 ESV] And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They said, "Into John's baptism."
[Act 19:4 ESV] And Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus."
[Act 19:5 ESV] On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
[Act 19:6 ESV] And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.
[Act 19:7 ESV] There were about twelve men in all.
Dive into 1 Corinthians
Prophecy is better than tongues, Compare & Contrast
(Context is key, in the local church. Why, we are talking about worship service.)
The word tongue is glōssa
Means the literal word tongue or
A. the language or dialect used by a particular people distinct from that of other nations
Paul is using a very obvious argument.
[1Cr 14:1 ESV] Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.
[1Cr 14:2 ESV] For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
[1Cr 14:3 ESV] On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their up-building and encouragement and consolation.
[1Cr 14:4 ESV] The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.
[1Cr 14:5 ESV] Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.
UNLESS SOMEONE INTERPRETS.
Palestinian Baptist Church, we Americans needed an interpreter
Speaking a foreign language is nothing but noise.
[1Cr 14:6 ESV] Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching?
[1Cr 14:7 ESV] If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played?
[1Cr 14:8 ESV] And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle?
[1Cr 14:9 ESV] So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air.
[1Cr 14:10 ESV] There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning,
[1Cr 14:11 ESV] but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me.
[1Cr 14:12 ESV] So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.
The Gift of Language Is An Effortless Gift. So pray for the ability to interpret what you just said.
[1Cr 14:13 ESV] Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret.
[1Cr 14:14 ESV] For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful.
[1Cr 14:15 ESV] What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also.
[1Cr 14:16 ESV] Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say "Amen" to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying?
[1Cr 14:17 ESV] For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up.
Paul was gifted to speak all kinds of Languages. And he will speak your language when he is at your church. Sounds Reasonable.
[1Cr 14:18 ESV] I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.
[1Cr 14:19 ESV] Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
Tongues = Languages is for non-believers, not for in the Church
[1Cr 14:20 ESV] Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature.
[1Cr 14:21 ESV] In the Law it is written, "By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord."
[1Cr 14:22 ESV] Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers.
Paul’s example of what should happen when non-believers come to church.
[1Cr 14:23 ESV] If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your minds?
[1Cr 14:24 ESV] But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all,
[1Cr 14:25 ESV] the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.

Chapter 12: Holy Spirit, Body of Christ, Unity
Chapter 13: LOVE
Chapter 14: Get Organized
[1Cr 12:1 ESV] Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.
Unity & Diversity in the gifts of the Holy Spirit
1 Holy Spirit
1 body of Christ
Chapter 13: Grow UP, It’s about Love
This is Hyperbole, because the real issue is LOVE.
[1Cr 13:1 ESV] If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
[1Cr 13:2 ESV] And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
[1Cr 13:3 ESV] If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.
Def. of tongues:
A. the language or dialect used by a particular people distinct from that of other nations
Can Paul really do all these things? No.
Did Paul experience some really cool stuff? Yes!
Paul experienced all the Sign Gifts.
Here is a highlight.
[2Cr 12:1 ESV] I must go on boasting. Though there is nothing to be gained by it, I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord.
[2Cr 12:2 ESV] I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven--whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows.
[2Cr 12:3 ESV] And I know that this man was caught up into paradise--whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows--
[2Cr 12:4 ESV] and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter.
The road to Damascus when he met Christ.
God’s Love
[1Cr 13:4 ESV] Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant
[1Cr 13:5 ESV] or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;
[1Cr 13:6 ESV] it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.
[1Cr 13:7 ESV] Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Ten Commandments
1-4: Relationship of Man towards God
5-10: Relationship of Man towards Man.
[Mat 22:36 ESV] "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?"
[Mat 22:37 ESV] And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
[Mat 22:38 ESV] This is the great and first commandment.
[Mat 22:39 ESV] And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
[Mat 22:40 ESV] On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets."
Love is greater than Spiritual Gifts
[1Cr 13:8 ESV] Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.
[1Cr 13:9 ESV] For we know in part and we prophesy in part,
[1Cr 13:10 ESV] but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.
John connects the Love Bridge.
[1Jo 4:9 ESV] In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.
[1Jo 4:10 ESV] In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
[1Jo 4:11 ESV] Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
[1Jo 4:12 ESV] No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.
[1Jo 4:13 ESV] By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.
[1Jo 4:14 ESV] And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.
[1Jo 4:15 ESV] Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
[1Jo 4:16 ESV] So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
[1Jo 4:17 ESV] By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world.
[1Jo 4:18 ESV] There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
[1Jo 4:19 ESV] We love because he first loved us.
[1Jo 4:20 ESV] If anyone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.
[1Jo 4:21 ESV] And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.
We are now reconciled to God through Jesus Christ.
[Rom 5:7 ESV] For one will scarcely die for a righteous person--though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die--
[Rom 5:8 ESV] but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
[Rom 5:9 ESV] Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
[Rom 5:10 ESV] For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
[Rom 5:11 ESV] More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
What does it look like to Love your Brother.
1. Come to church
Hbr 10:24 NIV - And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,
Hbr 10:25 NIV - not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Discipleship
[Eph 4:11 ESV] And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,
[Eph 4:12 ESV] to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
[Eph 4:13 ESV] until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
[Eph 4:14 ESV] so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.
[Eph 4:15 ESV] Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,
[Eph 4:16 ESV] from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
These gifts must be temporal spiritual gifts for certain time frames on Earth.
I believe Scripture is pointing us straight to Heaven and our future with God. Full intimacy
The perfect is the return of Christ.
The question is: When will the sign gifts cease?
What is “The Perfect”?
[1Cr 13:10 ESV] but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.
Two major camps of spiritual gifts. Cessation-ists and People who believe it Continues.
Many Cessationist make the claim that since the conclusion of the Cannon of Scripture is complete that is the “perfect”.
Historical, aside from the Bible, there is not much actual records of sign gifts like tongues & healing.
Is the Bible “The Perfect”?
The Word of God is Perfect, but is it The Perfect referred to by Paul?
There are several problems with that understanding.
Doubtful Paul while writing this letter, consider that his letters and a few other letters with the Gospels would become a small library and thus “complete and bring in the perfect”.
I believe the reason the gifts have not ceases is because the Holy Spirit is still manifesting Himself in powerful ways right now.
Salvation
Sanctification
The Fruit of the Spirit
The Ability to pray
Answered Prayer
On the other hand; Watch out for “showboating”
It is said don’t put God in a box, but if the only time your demonstrating the “gifts of the spirit” is during church time, that is a box.
If the sign gifts are being manifest, it is in the highways and byways, not on TV & large meetings.
People with the “gift of healing” should be in the hospitals.
People with the “gift of tongues” should know what language they are speaking and go be missionary.
[1Cr 13:11 ESV] When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.
Paul is not picking on sign gifts He is emphasizing the point, that it is time to GROW UP.
Stop whining and Obey Jesus
[Jhn 14:15 ESV] "If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
[Jhn 14:16 ESV] And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,
[Jhn 14:17 ESV] even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
A Mirror, time frame, NOW:
[1Cr 13:12 ESV] For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
James uses a mirror as an analogy.
[Jam 1:21 ESV] Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
[Jam 1:22 ESV] But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
[Jam 1:23 ESV] For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror.
[Jam 1:24 ESV] For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.
[Jam 1:25 ESV] But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
The Bible is not “The Perfect” described in by Paul.
“The Perfect” is return of Christ.
The reason for this is verse 12. “then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.” Emphasis a personal face to face intimacy.
[1Cr 13:13 ESV] So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

1 Corinthians; Chapter 12, Holy Spirit, Body of Christ, Unity
Saturday Oct 26, 2013
Saturday Oct 26, 2013
1. It takes the Holy Spirit
[1Cr 12:1 ESV] Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.
[1Cr 12:2 ESV] You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led.
[1Cr 12:3 ESV] Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says "Jesus is accursed!" and no one can say "Jesus is Lord" except in the Holy Spirit.
2. Gifts are for Service to be ACTIVE.
[1Cr 12:4 ESV] Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;
[1Cr 12:5 ESV] and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord;
[1Cr 12:6 ESV] and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.
3. Your Gift is for the COMMON GOOD. It’s not for you
[1Cr 12:7 ESV] To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
What is your SHAPE?
Spiritual gifts
Heart
Abilities
Personality
Experiences
The right perspective of the supernatural. No one can say “Jesus is Lord”, except in the Holy Spirit.
That is our base line. That is the evidence of super natural intervention.
That is the phenomenal. The Miraculous.
A warning from Jesus.
[Mat 7:21 ESV] "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
[Mat 7:22 ESV] On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?'
[Mat 7:23 ESV] And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.'
Are you truly bearing the fruit of the Holy Spirit & Jesus?
[Luk 6:43 ESV] "For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit,
[Luk 6:44 ESV] for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.
[Luk 6:45 ESV] The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
[Luk 6:46 ESV] "Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you?
[Luk 6:47 ESV] Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like:
[Luk 6:48 ESV] he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.
[Luk 6:49 ESV] But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great."
4. Most of you are already empowered to do most of these.
[1Cr 12:8 ESV] For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,
[1Cr 12:9 ESV] to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,
[1Cr 12:10 ESV] to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
[1Cr 12:11 ESV] All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
The Body of Christ. Many members, one body. We need each other.
** do not forsake meeting together**
[1Cr 12:12 ESV] For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.
[1Cr 12:13 ESV] For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--Jews or Greeks, slaves or free--and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
[1Cr 12:14 ESV] For the body does not consist of one member but of many.
[1Cr 12:15 ESV] If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body.
[1Cr 12:16 ESV] And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body.
[1Cr 12:17 ESV] If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell?
[1Cr 12:18 ESV] But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose.
[1Cr 12:19 ESV] If all were a single member, where would the body be?
[1Cr 12:20 ESV] As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.
[1Cr 12:21 ESV] The eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you," nor again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you."
[1Cr 12:22 ESV] On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable,
[1Cr 12:23 ESV] and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty,
[1Cr 12:24 ESV] which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it,
[1Cr 12:25 ESV] that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another.
[1Cr 12:26 ESV] If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.
[1Cr 12:27 ESV] Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.
Roll Call. Know your gifts and put them to work.
[1Cr 12:28 ESV] And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.
[1Cr 12:29 ESV] Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?
[1Cr 12:30 ESV] Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?
[1Cr 12:31 ESV] But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.

1 Corinthians; Chapter 11, Communion
Saturday Oct 19, 2013
Saturday Oct 19, 2013
Folllowing are the sermon notes and the selected Scriptures highlighing the topics and the depth of God's Holy Word.
Who wrote this letter: Paul
• When: Writes "1 Corinthians" [Corinthians B] (c. AD 54-55)
From Where? : Ephesus 1 Cor. 16:8
AUTHOR: PAUL, the apostle (1Cr 1:1; 1Cr 16:21)
PLACE OF WRITING: EPHESUS (1Cr 16:8)
TIME OF WRITING:
Probably in the spring of 57 A.D., shortly before the Jewish feast of Pentecost (1Cr 16:8), during his third missionary journey (Act 19).
You can learn about how the Corinth church was established in Act 18
Several things happened at the final supper.
The Last Supper, Was the Jewish Passover Feast. Exodus 12
The final plague of God.
A lamb would be slaughtered and the blood put on the door frame of the home.
Thus the judging angel would pass over their homes.
The last supper was a pass-over supper.
[Jhn 1:28 ESV] These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
[Jhn 1:29 ESV] The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
[Jhn 1:35 ESV] The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples,
[Jhn 1:36 ESV] and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!"
[Jhn 1:37 ESV] The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.
During that pass-over supper.
1.Jesus washed the disciples feet. John 13.
2.Jesus washed the feet of Judas Iscariot
Feet that would run to the evil and bring that evil to Jesus in a garden.
3. Peter would declare allegiance but be told he would deny Jesus.
Jesus promises a heavenly home.
[Jhn 14:1 ESV] "Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.
[Jhn 14:2 ESV] In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
[Jhn 14:3 ESV] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit.
Jesus Promises those who abide will bear fruit.
[Jhn 15:7 ESV] If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
[Jhn 15:8 ESV] By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
[Jhn 15:9 ESV] As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.
Jesus points out the world will hate you.
[Jhn 15:18 ESV] "If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.
[Jhn 15:19 ESV] If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
[Jhn 15:20 ESV] Remember the word that I said to you: 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.
[Jhn 15:21 ESV] But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.
[Jhn 15:22 ESV] If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.
[Jhn 15:23 ESV] Whoever hates me hates my Father also.
John 16
Jesus tells them about His death and how the disciples will all run away.
John 17 Jesus prays for His disciples and He prays for us also.
[Jhn 17:1 ESV] When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you,
[Jhn 17:2 ESV] since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.
[Jhn 17:3 ESV] And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
[Jhn 17:4 ESV] I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.
[Jhn 17:5 ESV] And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.
[Jhn 17:6 ESV] "I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.
[Jhn 17:7 ESV] Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you.
[Jhn 17:8 ESV] For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me.
[Jhn 17:9 ESV] I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.
[Jhn 17:10 ESV] All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.
[Jhn 17:11 ESV] And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.
[Jhn 17:12 ESV] While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.
[Jhn 17:13 ESV] But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
[Jhn 17:14 ESV] I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
[Jhn 17:15 ESV] I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.
[Jhn 17:16 ESV] They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
[Jhn 17:17 ESV] Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
[Jhn 17:18 ESV] As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.
[Jhn 17:19 ESV] And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.
[Jhn 17:20 ESV] "I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word,
[Jhn 17:21 ESV] that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
[Jhn 17:22 ESV] The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one,
[Jhn 17:23 ESV] I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.
[Jhn 17:24 ESV] Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.
[Jhn 17:25 ESV] O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me.
[Jhn 17:26 ESV] I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them."
Jesus shares this precious moment.
[Luk 22:14 ESV] And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him.
[Luk 22:15 ESV] And he said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
[Luk 22:16 ESV] For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God."
[Luk 22:17 ESV] And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, "Take this, and divide it among yourselves.
[Luk 22:18 ESV] For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."
[Luk 22:19 ESV] And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
[Luk 22:20 ESV] And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.
Now we come to the young church of Corinth.
And there are issues concerning the worship of communion.
[1Cr 11:17 ESV] But in the following instructions I do not commend you, because when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse.
[1Cr 11:18 ESV] For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you. And I believe it in part,
[1Cr 11:19 ESV] for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized.
Genuine: Those who love Jesus and those who don’t.
Galations 5. Those who struggle with sin
[Jhn 14:15 ESV] "If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
Missed the boat on the Lord’s Supper.
A hedonistic pot-luck.
[1Cr 11:20 ESV] When you come together, it is not the Lord's supper that you eat.
[1Cr 11:21 ESV] For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal. One goes hungry, another gets drunk.
[1Cr 11:22 ESV] What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not.
This Communion Supper is about Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for you.
God becomes bigger & you become smaller.
[1Cr 11:23 ESV] For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread,
[1Cr 11:24 ESV] and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
[1Cr 11:25 ESV] In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me."
[1Cr 11:26 ESV] For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes.
Warning to exercise humility
[1Cr 11:27 ESV] Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord.
[1Cr 11:28 ESV] Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
For the Christian: Judgment is God’s discipline for your sanctification
For the lost (experimenting with religion) a communion service could end with sickness or worse, death.
[1Cr 11:29 ESV] For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.
[1Cr 11:30 ESV] That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.
Don’t be afraid to judge yourself in the view of perfection.
You are supposed to recognize and hate your sin.
Hatred of your sin leads to repentance.
[1Cr 11:31 ESV] But if we judged ourselves truly, we would not be judged.
[1Cr 11:32 ESV] But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined so that we may not be condemned along with the world.
God does not condemn you, but He has Set You Free!
[Rom 8:1 ESV] There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
[Rom 8:2 ESV] For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.
[Rom 8:3 ESV] For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh,
[Rom 8:4 ESV] in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Free Indeed
[Jhn 8:34 ESV] Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.
[Jhn 8:35 ESV] The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever.
[Jhn 8:36 ESV] So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
[Gal 5:1 ESV] For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
[1Cr 11:33 ESV] So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another--
[1Cr 11:34 ESV] if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home--so that when you come together it will not be for judgment. About the other things I will give directions when I come.

Watch the powerpoint with the podcast and use the following sermon notes to deepen the study.
Basic premise; People are not that bad, God is overacting, petty, tyrannical
Grace & Mercy have no value unless they stand on the foundation of Justice.
No one struggles with the following verse.
[Rom 3:23 ESV] for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
We think sin is just, not that bad. Basically good but with a few tattered edges.
We are not really bothered with the following verse.
[Rom 6:23 ESV] For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Everybody dies, and look, God will take us to Heaven anyway.
But we really don’t believe these verses.
[Jer 17:9 ESV] The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
[Jer 17:10 ESV] "I the LORD search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds."
[Isa 53:6 ESV] All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned--every one--to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
[Psa 14:1 ESV] To the choirmaster. Of David. The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good.
[Psa 14:2 ESV] The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God.
[Psa 14:3 ESV] They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.
Now look upon the cross of Jesus and tell Him you are really not that bad.
Justice,
Common Grace is Delayed Justice
[Rom 8:28 NIV] And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
[2Pe 3:9 NIV] The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
The opposite is true for those who hate God.
[Hbr 10:26 NIV] If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left,
[Hbr 10:27 NIV] but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.
[Hbr 10:28 NIV] Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
[Hbr 10:29 NIV] How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?
[Hbr 10:30 NIV] For we know him who said, "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," and again, "The Lord will judge his people."
[Hbr 10:31 NIV] It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Special Grace & Mercy.
[Rom 3:20 NIV] Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God's sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.
[Rom 3:21 NIV] But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify.
[Rom 3:22 NIV] This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile,
[Rom 3:23 NIV] for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
[Rom 3:24 NIV] and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
[Rom 3:25 NIV] God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood--to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished--
[Rom 3:26 NIV] he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
Paul now begins to instruct about Corporate Worship Behavior.
Prayer & Worship
Communion
[1Cr 11:1 ESV] Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.
[1Cr 11:2 ESV] Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you.
Theology: Required Order Of Responsibility. God, Jesus, Man, Woman.
[1Cr 11:3 ESV] But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.
Is this just a cultural thing or is it a theological/spiritual issue? Yes!
The Intent of Cultural Practice and the Intent of the heart.
It’s a cultural issue with spiritual significance.
Consider Jewish Culture. Men wore prayer shawls.
Issues specific to Corinthian Cultural.
1. Men with long hair; bad
2. women with short hair or shaven head; bad.
3. Head coverings meant submission.
a. Women good
b. Men bad
[1Cr 11:4 ESV] Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head,
[1Cr 11:5 ESV] but every wife who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since it is the same as if her head were shaven.
[1Cr 11:6 ESV] For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head.
Complementarianism holds that "God has created men and women equal in their essential dignity and human personhood, but different and complementary in function
Politically incorrect but Theologically Factual.
[1Cr 11:7 ESV] For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man.
Glory: doxa
Dignity, Dignities:
primarily denotes "an opinion, estimation, repute;" in the NT, always "good opinion, praise, honor, glory, an appearance commanding respect, magnificence, excellence, manifestation of glory;" hence, of angelic powers, in respect of their state as commanding recognition, "dignities," 2Pe 2:10;
It is issue of submission verses rebellion
[1Cr 11:8 ESV] For man was not made from woman, but woman from man.
[1Cr 11:9 ESV] Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.
Genesis Chapter 2
[Gen 2:18 ESV] Then the LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him."
Say What? What do the angels have to do with it?
[1Cr 11:10 ESV] That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.
1. Angels know their role and don’t buck the system
2. The Heavenly host is watching to see if our hearts are obedient or rebellious against God.
Paul Levels the Playing Field. Complementarianism.
[1Cr 11:11 ESV] Nevertheless, in the Lord
woman is not independent of man
nor man of woman;
[1Cr 11:12 ESV] for as woman was made from man, so man is now born of woman.
And all things are from God.
Back to the heart’s intent in the context of that cultural.
[1Cr 11:13 ESV] Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a wife to pray to God with her head uncovered?
Universally cultural. Men hairs styles vary, but long hair for women have always been accepted.
[1Cr 11:14 ESV] Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him,
[1Cr 11:15 ESV] but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering.
[1Cr 11:16 ESV] If anyone is inclined to be contentious, we have no such practice, nor do the churches of God.
No Set Practice in the other churches.
You can argue all day long.

What happens to people without an Advocate before A Holy God.
Keep in mind: They had an atonement system to avert the Wrath of God but not remove it.
[Hbr 10:1 ESV] For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.
[Hbr 10:2 ESV] Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins?
Every evil act of rebellion The Israelites did was in plain sight of God’s Visible presence. Don’t rebel against God, when you can go out your front door and see His presence. (They are an example to us)
[1Cr 10:5 ESV] Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
[1Cr 10:6 ESV] Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did.
Oh Oh, Idol worship leads to all kinds of sin. Paul mentions Exodus 32 and the Golden Calf.
[Exd 32:1 ESV] When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him, "Up, make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him."
[Exd 32:2 ESV] So Aaron said to them, "Take off the rings of gold that are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me."
[Exd 32:3 ESV] So all the people took off the rings of gold that were in their ears and brought them to Aaron.
[Exd 32:4 ESV] And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden calf. And they said, "These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!"
[Exd 32:5 ESV] When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, "Tomorrow shall be a feast to the LORD."
[Exd 32:6 ESV] And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.
Golden Calf
[1Cr 10:7 ESV] Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play."
The Judgment:
[Exd 32:27 ESV] And he said to them, "Thus says the LORD God of Israel, 'Put your sword on your side each of you, and go to and fro from gate to gate throughout the camp, and each of you kill his brother and his companion and his neighbor.'"
[Exd 32:28 ESV] And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. And that day about three thousand men of the people fell.
[Exd 32:35 ESV] Then the LORD sent a plague on the people, because they made the calf, the one that Aaron made.
But Aaron was forgiven.
[1Cr 10:8 ESV] We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three
thousand fell in a single day.
The Event in Numbers.
[Num 25:1 ESV] While Israel lived in Shittim, the people began to whore with the daughters of Moab.
[Num 25:2 ESV] These invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.
[Num 25:3 ESV] So Israel yoked himself to Baal of Peor. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.
[Num 25:4 ESV] And the LORD said to Moses, "Take all the chiefs of the people and hang them in the sun before the LORD, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel."
[Num 25:5 ESV] And Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Each of you kill those of his men who have yoked themselves to Baal of Peor."
[Num 25:6 ESV] And behold, one of the people of Israel came and brought a Midianite woman to his family, in the sight of Moses and in the sight of the whole congregation of the people of Israel, while they were weeping in the entrance of the tent of meeting.
[Num 25:7 ESV] When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose and left the congregation and took a spear in his hand
[Num 25:8 ESV] and went after the man of Israel into the chamber and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. Thus the plague on the people of Israel was stopped.
[Num 25:9 ESV] Nevertheless, those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.
[Num 25:10 ESV] And the LORD said to Moses,
[Num 25:11 ESV] "Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I did not consume the people of Israel in my jealousy.
Biblical Integrity Issue? Is it 23 or 24 thousand? Answer Yes!
The Big Idea: Don’t rebel against God when He is Right There! A lot of people died.
It’s over 23 thousand.
Paul mentions Numbers 21. Fiery serpents, because people were grumbling against God.
[1Cr 10:9 ESV] We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents,
Paul points to Numbers 16 Woah, Never challenge God especially when you can see Him.
God sent a plague into the Israelite Camp.
Serpents
[Num 21:4 ESV] From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way.
[Num 21:5 ESV] And the people spoke against God and against Moses, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food."
[Num 21:6 ESV] Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.
[Num 21:7 ESV] And the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us." So Moses prayed for the people.
[Num 21:8 ESV] And the LORD said to Moses, "Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live."
[Num 21:9 ESV] So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.
[Num 21:10 ESV] And the people of Israel set out and camped in Oboth.
This is where Jesus references His sacrifice in John 3
[Jhn 3:13 ESV] No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.
[Jhn 3:14 ESV] And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
[Jhn 3:15 ESV] that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
[1Cr 10:10 ESV] nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer.
The Israelites rebelled against Moses
[Num 16:42 ESV] And when the congregation had assembled against Moses and against Aaron, they turned toward the tent of meeting. And behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared.
[Num 16:43 ESV] And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting,
[Num 16:44 ESV] and the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
[Num 16:45 ESV] "Get away from the midst of this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment." And they fell on their faces.
[Num 16:46 ESV] And Moses said to Aaron, "Take your censer, and put fire on it from off the altar and lay incense on it and carry it quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone out from the LORD; the plague has begun."
[Num 16:47 ESV] So Aaron took it as Moses said and ran into the midst of the assembly. And behold, the plague had already begun among the people. And he put on the incense and made atonement for the people.
[Num 16:48 ESV] And he stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was stopped.
[Num 16:49 ESV] Now those who died in the plague were 14,700, besides those who died in the affair of Korah.
[Num 16:50 ESV] And Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting, when the plague was stopped.
Paul, why are you telling Christians about these things?
[1Cr 10:11 ESV] Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come.
A Humble view of yourself.
God is HOLY & Sovereign, WE are Not.
[1Cr 10:12 ESV] Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.
God’s Wrath has not consumed us, because His wrath has consumed Jesus Christ instead of us.
Note: Paul doesn’t say Christians are never tempted.
He says God has got your back when you are tempted.
[1Cr 10:13 ESV] No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
[1Cr 10:14 ESV] Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
The Offering of Christ and the memorial , Flesh and Blood. Unity the Christians that is why it is called Communion. Individuals with God and with each other. Commune.
[1Cr 10:15 ESV] I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.
[1Cr 10:16 ESV] The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?
[1Cr 10:17 ESV] Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.
The Jewish Sacrificial System. The people and the Levites ate the offerings.
[1Cr 10:18 ESV] Consider the people of Israel: are not those who eat the sacrifices participants in the altar?
An Idol is nothing, The Food is Food, but the intent of the pagans is evil.
[1Cr 10:19 ESV] What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?
[1Cr 10:20 ESV] No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons.
[1Cr 10:21 ESV] You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.
[1Cr 10:22 ESV] Shall we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?
Freedom In Christ. Use it to encourage others.
[1Cr 10:23 ESV] "All things are lawful," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful," but not all things build up.
[1Cr 10:24 ESV] Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.
The Model, Don’t ask, don’t tell.
[1Cr 10:25 ESV] Eat whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of conscience.
[1Cr 10:26 ESV] For "the earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof."
[1Cr 10:27 ESV] If one of the unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience.
[1Cr 10:28 ESV] But if someone says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience—
Our day is alcohol. There is no command, “thou shalt not”. But for me. . . .
It’s not about you smartypants, it’s about them.
[1Cr 10:29 ESV] I do not mean your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone else's conscience?
[1Cr 10:30 ESV] If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of that for which I give thanks?
Why? The Glory of God, That’s Why!
[1Cr 10:31 ESV] So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
[1Cr 10:32 ESV] Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God,
[1Cr 10:33 ESV] just as I try to please everyone in everything I do,
not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.

- Concerning How Christians should live in their community.
- True Freedom in Christ,
- Use your Freedom to edify others and proclaim the Gospel
- The Drive: to love Jesus Christ and Love our neighbor.
[1Cr 10:1 ESV] For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea,
[1Cr 10:2 ESV] and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,
[1Cr 10:3 ESV] and all ate the same spiritual food,
[1Cr 10:4 ESV] and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.
Cloud, Sea, Food, Water. Physically Real or Spiritual? YES!
Cloud:
[Exd 13:21 ESV] And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night.
Red Sea Event
[Exd 14:27 ESV] So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its normal course when the morning appeared. And as the Egyptians fled into it, the LORD threw the Egyptians into the midst of the sea.
[Exd 14:28 ESV] The waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen; of all the host of Pharaoh that had followed them into the sea, not one of them remained.
[Exd 14:29 ESV] But the people of Israel walked on dry ground through the sea, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.
[Exd 14:30 ESV] Thus the LORD saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.
[Exd 14:31 ESV] Israel saw the great power that the LORD used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the LORD, and they believed in the LORD and in his servant Moses.
[1Cr 10:3 ESV] and all ate the same spiritual food,
- Manna
- I. manna
- A. the bread from Heaven that fed the Israelites for 40 years of wilderness wanderings
- B. means 'What is it?'
[Exd 16:13 ESV] In the evening quail came up and covered the camp, and in the morning dew lay around the camp.
[Exd 16:14 ESV] And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as frost on the ground.
[Exd 16:15 ESV] When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, "What is it?" For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, "It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat.
[1Cr 10:4 ESV] and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.
Water from rock 1 Exodus 17
Location: Outside of Egypt, the tract of wilderness between Elim and Sinai
[Exd 17:2 ESV] Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, "Give us water to drink." And Moses said to them, "Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the LORD?"
[Exd 17:3 ESV] But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, "Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?"
[Exd 17:4 ESV] So Moses cried to the LORD, "What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me."
[Exd 17:5 ESV] And the LORD said to Moses, "Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.
[Exd 17:6 ESV] Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink." And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.
[Exd 17:7 ESV] And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the LORD by saying, "Is the LORD among us or not?"
Water from rock 2 Numbers 20
Location: the wilderness of Zin, name given to a portion of the desert tract between the Dead Sea and Arabah on the east in which Kadesh-barnea was located
[Num 20:2 ESV] Now there was no water for the congregation. And they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.
[Num 20:3 ESV] And the people quarreled with Moses and said, "Would that we had perished when our brothers perished before the LORD!
[Num 20:4 ESV] Why have you brought the assembly of the LORD into this wilderness, that we should die here, both we and our cattle?
[Num 20:5 ESV] And why have you made us come up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place? It is no place for grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, and there is no water to drink."
[Num 20:6 ESV] Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the entrance of the tent of meeting and fell on their faces. And the glory of the LORD appeared to them,
[Num 20:7 ESV] and the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
[Num 20:9 ESV] And Moses took the staff from before the LORD, as he commanded him.
[Num 20:10 ESV] Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, "Hear now, you rebels: shall we bring water for you out of this rock?"
[Num 20:11 ESV] And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, and water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their livestock.
[Num 20:12 ESV] And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not believe in me, to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them."
[Num 20:13 ESV] These are the waters of Meribah, where the people of Israel quarreled with the LORD, and through them He showed himself holy.

Rock & Roll!
The Rock: A description of God. 5xs in Deut 32.
[Deu 32:3 ESV] For I will proclaim the name of the LORD; ascribe greatness to our God!
[Deu 32:4 ESV] "The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.
[1Sa 2:2 ESV] "There is none holy like the LORD: for there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God.
[2Sa 22:2 ESV] He said, "The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
[2Sa 22:3 ESV] my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence.
[2Sa 22:32 ESV] "For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God?
[2Sa 22:47 ESV] "The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation,
[2Sa 23:3 ESV] The God of Israel has spoken; the Rock of Israel has said to me: When one rules justly over men, ruling in the fear of God,
[Psa 18:2 ESV] The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
[Psa 19:14 ESV] Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.
[Psa 28:1 ESV] Of David. To you, O LORD, I call; my rock, be not deaf to me, lest, if you be silent to me, I become like those who go down to the pit.
[Psa 31:2 ESV] Incline your ear to me; rescue me speedily! Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me!
[Psa 42:9 ESV] I say to God, my rock: "Why have you forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?"
[Psa 62:2 ESV] He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.
[Psa 78:35 ESV] They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer.
Back to 1 Cor. [1Cr 10:4 ESV] and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.
Jesus is God. The 2nd member of the Trinity.
I AM
[Jhn 8:57 ESV] So the Jews said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?"
[Jhn 8:58 ESV] Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am."
[Jhn 8:59 ESV] So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.
Image of the Invisible God.
[Col 1:15 ESV] He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
[Col 1:16 ESV] For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things were created through him and for him.
[Col 1:17 ESV] And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
[Col 1:18 ESV] And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
[Col 1:19 ESV] For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,
[Col 1:20 ESV] and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
[Col 1:21 ESV] And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds,
[Col 1:22 ESV] he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him,
What happens to people without an Advocate before A Holy God.

1 Corinthians; Chapter 9, Speak The Gospel
Saturday Sep 14, 2013

The Big Idea: The Gospel with no barriers for brothers & the lost.
Use your freedom to proclaim the Gospel
Am I not an Apostle?
[1Cr 9:1 ESV] Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord?
[1Cr 9:2 ESV] If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you, for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.
[1Cr 9:3 ESV] This is my defense to those who would examine me.
Don’t I have rights also?
[1Cr 9:4 ESV] Do we not have the right to eat and drink?
[1Cr 9:5 ESV] Do we not have the right to take along a believing wife, as do the other apostles and the brothers of the Lord and Cephas?
[1Cr 9:6 ESV] Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living?
[1Cr 9:7 ESV] Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard without eating any of its fruit? Or who tends a flock without getting some of the milk?
The Bible commands you compensate your workers.
[1Cr 9:8 ESV] Do I say these things on human authority? Does not the Law say the same?
[1Cr 9:9 ESV] For it is written in the Law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain." Is it for oxen that God is concerned?
[1Cr 9:10 ESV] Does he not certainly speak for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of sharing in the crop.
Shouldn’t an Apostle be remunerated?
[1Cr 9:11 ESV] If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you?
[1Cr 9:12 ESV] If others share this rightful claim on you, do not we even more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ.
The Temple Economy
[1Cr 9:13 ESV] Do you not know that those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings?
[1Cr 9:14 ESV] In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel.
I Must Share The Gospel!
[1Cr 9:15 ESV] But I have made no use of any of these rights, nor am I writing these things to secure any such provision. For I would rather die than have anyone deprive me of my ground for boasting.
[1Cr 9:16 ESV] For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!
[1Cr 9:17 ESV] For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward, but if not of my own will, I am still entrusted with a stewardship.
Paul’s Reward; Sharing the Gospel Free of Charge
[1Cr 9:18 ESV] What then is my reward? That in my preaching I may present the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.
Why: That he might win some.
[1Cr 9:19 ESV] For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them.
His Strategy
[1Cr 9:20 ESV] To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law.
[1Cr 9:21 ESV] To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law.
[1Cr 9:22 ESV] To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.
“I do it all for the sake of the Gospel”
[1Cr 9:23 ESV] I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.
Why the Gospel?
Means Good News. What is the good news?
The ABC, The Romans Road, The Color Book/Bracelet.
The reason Jesus Christ went to the cross.
If that does not move you, you don’t belong to God.
The story about Jesus Christ, the Cross, The resurrection, the atonement from God,
The only way for a human to make it to Heaven.
The only way for a human to be forgiven for being evil.
The only way for God declare a human “not guilty”.
The only way for satisfy the God’s 10 commandments.
The only way to have a relationship with God
Yet, when was the last time you told anybody about the work of Jesus Christ?
Think about why you are silent.
Why we want to be Disciples: To respond to God’s love through the Gospel
Why we want to Worship: To respond to God’s Love through the Gospel
Why we Fellowship: To respond to God’s Love through the Gospel
Why we Minister: To respond to God’s Love through the Gospel
Why we Evangelize: To respond to God’s Love through the Gospel
The Gospel is the reason we Exist!
Are you in it to win it?
[1Cr 9:24 ESV] Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.
[1Cr 9:25 ESV] Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.
[1Cr 9:26 ESV] So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air.
Discipline your life, so you can share the Gospel
[1Cr 9:27 ESV] But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.
